Cash Handling for Luxury & Fashion Retail in Dubai: Multi-Currency Counters & Counterfeit Protection

A luxury store looks like a card-and-app business, but a lot of its money still comes in as cash - and often in foreign currency. One sale can be a thick stack of high-value notes, sometimes in euros, dollars, or roubles rather than dirhams. The team has to count it fast, value it correctly, catch any counterfeit, and close the day with clean numbers - all without keeping a high-spending customer waiting on the floor.

Dubai is one of the top luxury retail destinations in the world, and fashion is a big part of it. Stores in The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, and City Walk draw buyers from all over, and the same brands trade in Abu Dhabi and across the wider Gulf. When international tourists arrive in large numbers, cash - and foreign cash - goes up with them.

Here is a real example from one of our clients.

How a global fashion group handled a cash surge in Dubai

LVMH FG EAU represents Celine, Givenchy, and Loewe across the region. In 2022, Dubai saw a large influx of Russian tourists, and with it a wave of high-value designer-fashion purchases - a lot of it paid in cash only.

That created a real problem at the till: large amounts of foreign currency coming in fast, which staff had to check and value by hand while a queue built up.

We fitted each outlet with a Cassida Xpecto - a compact multi-currency counter that fits the tight space behind a luxury counter - so the team could count and value a mixed stack of currencies in seconds and check every note for fakes at the same time. For end-of-day reconciliation, we added printers, so each count comes out as a printed report the finance team can file.

It worked well enough that the rollout grew. We started with the Dubai stores, and this year we supplied their stores in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain too.

Why luxury retail cash is different

A fashion boutique is not a supermarket. A few differences change the kind of machine you need:

High-value stacks. One sale can be a thick stack of AED 500s and 1,000s, or a pile of euros or dollars. A miscount, or one counterfeit note, is a big loss on a single transaction.

Foreign currency is normal. Tourists pay in their own currency far more than in most retail. Valuing that by hand is slow and easy to get wrong.

Space is tight and the experience matters. There is little room behind a luxury counter, and you cannot keep a high-spending customer waiting or make them watch a clumsy manual count. A compact machine that counts and checks in seconds fits both the space and the service.

Counterfeit protection on the shop floor

High-value notes are the ones counterfeiters go after, and a busy boutique taking large foreign stacks is exposed. Checking notes by eye does not catch good fakes, especially with a queue waiting. A counter with built-in UV, magnetic, and infrared checks screens every note during the count, so a counterfeit is caught at the till instead of found later at the bank.

The setup we recommend for a fashion store

Count, check, and value at the till; reconcile with a printed report at the back.

On the shop floor - Cassida Xpecto: a compact multi-currency counter that reads and values 20-plus currencies, checks each note for fakes, and has a screen the customer can watch as the money is counted.

For the back office and bigger stores - Cassida Neo Max: it brings the day’s takings together, checks them, and prints a documented total, so reconciliation rests on a printed record rather than a handwritten note.

Practical points for luxury retail cash handling

Value foreign cash at the till. Do not guess a rate or send a customer away - count and value the mixed stack in front of them.

Print a report for every day’s count. A printed total per outlet gives finance a clean record and makes multi-store reconciliation simple.

All Cassida machines read the new polymer AED notes. The Central Bank is moving AED notes to polymer. Every Cassida machine reads all versions, old and new, so you will not reject a real note at the counter.

Clean the machine regularly. Cash is dirty, and a high-traffic boutique runs a lot of notes. Dust and grime build up inside and cause miscounts or jams, so the machine needs regular cleaning - which our service center handles.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fashion store really need a multi-currency counter? If it serves international tourists, yes. Foreign cash is normal at a luxury counter, and valuing it by hand is slow and error-prone. A multi-currency counter values a mixed stack in seconds.

How do we reconcile across several stores? Each outlet counts its own takings on its own machine and prints a report. Head office then compares like-for-like totals instead of handwritten notes.

Can the machine catch fake foreign notes? Yes. Built-in UV, magnetic, and infrared checks screen euros, dollars, and other currencies during the count, so a counterfeit is caught at the till.

Why fashion retailers switch to Cassida

Many stores first buy a counter on the open market or from an online marketplace. It works at first, but when it jams, misreads notes, or needs cleaning mid-day, there is no one to call. That is when they move to Cassida: we run the only specialized service center for cash machines in the region, in Al Quoz, Dubai, so a machine is cleaned, fixed, or replaced fast instead of sitting broken behind the counter.
