Cash Handling for Dubai’s Traditional Souks: Spice, Textile & Market Stalls
Dubai’s traditional souks - the Spice Souk, the Textile Souk, and dozens of smaller markets across Deira and Bur Dubai - are hundreds of small, independent stalls. Each runs its own till, deals mostly in cash, and serves a mix of tourist bargain-hunters and repeat locals. It is a different cash world from one big shop: high transaction frequency, lower average value, and customers paying in whatever currency is in their pocket.
The Gold Souk sits in the same district but has its own rules - the AED 55,000 AML threshold, VAT on investment gold - and our Gold & Jewellery guide covers those. This piece is about the Spice, Textile, and general market stalls that make up most of the souk footprint. The same kind of stall trades across the UAE.
What makes souk cash handling distinct
High frequency, low value. A stall can process dozens of small cash sales an hour, so the machine has to be quick and simple.
Many currencies. Tourists pay in dirhams, dollars, euros, and more, sometimes in one afternoon, so foreign notes need checking too.
Small space, family staff. Counters are tiny and staff rotate, so the machine must be compact and need no training.
A tourist-refund note for stall owners
The UAE Tourist VAT Refund only applies to purchases of AED 250 or more at a registered retailer, exported within 90 days. For a AED 60 scarf that never comes up, but for a carpet, a tailoring order, or a bulk spice purchase that crosses the threshold it is worth having the paperwork ready, since tourists increasingly ask.
The setup we recommend for a souk stall
Keep it compact and simple, and add currency handling where tourists pay in foreign cash.
For high-frequency AED stalls - Cassida 5510UV: a compact, no-frills counter, up to 1,000 notes a minute with UV fake detection, that keeps a small till moving without taking counter space.
For stalls that see foreign cash - Cassida Axia: it counts and totals a mixed AED and foreign stack across 5 currencies without pre-sorting, so no one estimates a rate mid-sale.
For a busier stall or a market office consolidating vendors - Cassida Xpecto Lite for professional AED mixed-value counting, or the Cassida Xpecto for full 20-currency support across many vendors.
Practical points
Match the machine to the stall. A small-item Spice stall and a Textile stall doing large tailoring orders have different needs; do not over- or under-equip either.
Screen foreign notes too. Tourist stalls see currency from dozens of countries; the eye cannot reliably catch a fake in an unfamiliar note.
All Cassida machines read the new polymer AED notes. As the Central Bank rolls out polymer AED notes, every Cassida machine reads all versions, old and new, so no real note is turned away.
Clean the machines often. Souk cash passes through many hands and is very dirty; grime builds up inside and causes miscounts and jams, so regular cleaning matters - our service center handles it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a small stall really need a bill counter? Even a modest stall gains from cutting minutes off every close, and the counterfeit screening alone is worth an entry-level machine in a tourist-heavy market.
Is a multi-currency counter worth it for a stall? It depends how often foreign cash comes in. For stalls that see it daily, a mixed-value counter like the Axia saves real time; for occasional cases, a standard AED counter with a manual check is enough.
Does the tourist VAT refund apply to souk purchases? Only if the retailer is registered and the purchase is AED 250 or more, exported within 90 days. Most small souvenirs do not reach it, but a larger tailoring or bulk order can.
Why souk vendors switch to Cassida
Many stall owners first buy a counter on the open market or from an online marketplace, then have no one to call when it stops reading notes. They switch to Cassida because we run the region’s only specialized service center for cash machines, in Al Quoz, Dubai, so even a small stall gets a machine cleaned, fixed, or replaced fast.
