Currency Counters for Exchange Houses in Dubai: Multi-Currency Cash Handling & Compliance
Exchange houses are the one business where multi-currency cash handling is not a nice-to-have - it is the whole job. Every counter deals in AED alongside a rotating mix of world currencies, all day, and each note has to be counted, valued, and checked for fakes at speed.
Unlike a shop that occasionally takes foreign cash, an exchange house is a licensed financial business under the Central Bank of the UAE, with real reporting duties on top of the counting. The same is true across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the other emirates. Here is a real example from one of our clients.
30 currencies per machine for Dinar Exchange
Dinar Exchange needed a machine that could handle 30 different currencies each. We installed 6 machines at their branch, every one loaded with 30 currencies as requested.
Sitting close to the hotels and trade hub of Deira, they see a lot of visitors carrying foreign cash - mainly Sri Lankan rupees, Nepalese rupees, Thai baht, Vietnamese dong, Philippine pesos, and Indian rupees. The model we installed was the Cassida Neo Max.
We also hold an annual maintenance contract with them and, in line with Central Bank rules, provide monthly updates - including new-note and counterfeit-note updates - which they record in their reports.
Why an exchange counter needs a different class of machine
Every stack is mixed. A counter values many currencies at once, so the machine has to read and value a mixed stack, not just AED.
Speed and accuracy together. High transaction volume means the machine has to be fast without ever miscounting a value.
Counterfeit screening is central. Foreign notes from many countries are hard to judge by eye; automatic UV, MG, and IR checks catch fakes during the count.
The regulatory side
Buying and selling foreign currency as a business is licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE, with minimum capital and ongoing compliance duties. Part of that is keeping equipment current and keeping records: an exchange house is expected to update its machines for new notes and to report accurately. A machine that records what it counts, and a supplier that keeps it updated for new and counterfeit notes, make that duty far easier to meet - which is exactly the monthly update service we run for Dinar Exchange. Confirm current requirements with a qualified compliance advisor, since rules are updated from time to time.
The setup we recommend for an exchange house
Value and check every currency at the counter, and keep the note database current.
For the counter - Cassida Neo Max: it handles up to 30 currencies, checks each note for fakes, and prints a documented, serial-number-backed record - the machine Dinar Exchange runs.
For a compact or second position - Cassida Xpecto: a multi-currency counter for 20-plus currencies with a screen the customer can watch.
For sorting and back-office control - Cassida Artemis: a two-pocket sorter with serial-number recognition for a clean, checkable record.
Practical points
Keep the currency database current. New notes appear regularly; an updated machine values and checks them correctly instead of rejecting real cash.
Record what you count. Serial-number recognition gives you a checkable record that supports your reporting.
All Cassida machines read the new polymer AED notes. As the Central Bank rolls out polymer AED notes, every Cassida machine reads all versions, old and new, so a real note is never turned away.
Clean the machines often. Exchange counters run enormous note volume; dust and grime build up inside and cause miscounts and jams, so regular cleaning is essential - our service center handles it.
Frequently asked questions
How many currencies can one machine handle? The Cassida Neo Max can be loaded with up to 30 currencies - the exact requirement Dinar Exchange had across 6 machines.
Do exchange houses have to keep machines updated for new notes? As a Central Bank-supervised business, yes - keeping equipment current and reporting accurately is part of compliance. Our monthly update service covers new and counterfeit-note updates.
Can the machine give a record for reporting? Yes. Serial-number recognition on the Neo Max and Artemis produces a checkable record to sit behind your reports.
Why exchange houses switch to Cassida
Many exchange houses first buy counters on the open market or from an online marketplace, then get no updates for new notes and no one to call when a machine fails. They switch to Cassida because we run the region’s only specialized service center for cash machines, in Al Quoz, Dubai, and we keep the currency database and counterfeit updates current under an annual contract.
